Tech Field Day is a series of invite-only technical meetings between influencers and sponsoring enterprise IT companies. We refer to influencers as delegates and invite them from around the world. Companies share their products and innovations through presentations, demos, roundtables, and more. Over 2-3 days, a panel of a dozen delegates interact with companies on-site in areas like Silicon Valley. These sessions are live-streamed and recordings are shared across our social media channels like YouTube and Twitter. Our events focus on enterprise IT topics from the datacenter to the cloud, mobility and networking to security and storage.
This event is the second AI Field Day #AIFD2.
The companies presenting at this event are Scality, Memverge, Liqid and Intel.

Until relatively recently, HPC workloads have been characterized by the needs of the engineering and scientific community largely around modeling and simulation. Applications such as CFD, crash analysis, seismic exploration, reservoir modeling, and climate simulation drove similar requirements for the systems they run on. The advent of big data and AI/ML/DL, however, has seen new requirements being placed on all elements of the HPC infrastructure, compute, and storage alike. A transition is underway from legacy storage solutions to modern data platforms, not only to satisfy the traditional modeling/simulation workloads but also heterogeneously support the newer AI/ML/DL workloads.
On Thursday, April 29, the next in a series of virtual HPC User Forum Special Events will stream live. Analysts, vendor strategists, and end-users will share and discuss perspectives on modern data workloads with a focus on performance, scale, and simplicity. The event will conclude with a panel discussion around the current state and future of the modern data platform.

Frederic Van Haren was one of the pioneers that developed the world’s first speech recognition. While at Nuance, he built a High Performance Computing (HPC) environment even before HPC was a thing. He was one of the first to deploy Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) as opposed to traditional CPUs. He was later involved in many of the voice recognition companies such as Cerence, SIRI, and others.
In this entertaining and informative fireside chat, speech recognition pioneer Frederic Van Haren, CTO & Founder of HighFens, talks with Lynn Orlando, Head of Content Marketing at WekaIO, about how speech recognition training models work, how to architect an environment to support vast amounts of audio data, and what the future holds for GPUs. Here’s what you can expect to learn:
- How speech was “ground zero” for much of the modern AI effort
- Why the data-processing path from voice to text is so complex
- Why the combined role of GPUs and multicore CPUs is important
- What products and services we can look forward to in the future as speech recognition technology continues to evolve

Frederic Van Haren is a high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) expert. He enjoys designing complex solutions and building high performing architecture that positively impacts a company’s bottom line.
Called the Tech Forecaster, Van Haren has the unique ability to view an existing architecture, forecast issues the company will face, and quickly design a solution that’s efficient and impactful. As a consultant, Van Haren provides technical leadership and strategic direction to a variety of tech, telecommunications and speech companies as well as help companies move to the cloud.
Before launching HighFens, Van Haren built and led the HPC and AI environment at Nuance Communications. With an annual budget of $15 million, he developed a scalable environment for more than 500 researchers, grew from 10 desktops to 115+ racks of equipment, and regularly updated a variety of hardware — with zero disruption to the business. Under his leadership, the company saw cost savings of more than 30 percent.
Van Haren also helped an IBM Watson team speed up the creation of a prototype and delivered a developer platform to facilitate research for more than 100 users. He was also instrumental in developing an HPC cluster for an IBM JDA and deployed 4X faster than the original vendor projection with a cost saving of 45 percent.
He has served as president of a variety of technology user groups, promoting the use of innovative technologies and is the founder of HPE 3PAR and MicroFocus Vertica.
Van Haren holds a master’s degree in electrical engineering, electronics and automation. Born in Antwerp, Belgium, he now lives in the Greater Boston area with his wife and four children.
